I love the smell of accountability in the morning!
Oh dear, oh dear…
The Auditor-General’s report has raised many questions indeed. The report
highlighted some ‘questionable’ expenditure by government departments for the
past year, and the result has caused some high-ranking individuals to feel
pretty uncomfortable right now.
And rightly so they should be, with public funds being used as such:-
RM10,700 for a set of technical books that can be
purchased for RM417;
RM224 for a set of screwdrivers which can be obtained
for RM40;
RM1,146.56 for pens which costs RM160;
Two 3.1 mega pixel digital cameras bought for RM8,254
each when the market price is RM2,990;
RM5.72 million for two crane towers against the market
price of RM2.98 million;
26,000 study loans given by the PTPTN to non-Malaysian
students;
5 government agencies in Johore that paid between 42
percent and 74 percent more to acquire land for various projects;
Sarawak had overspent 72 percent of its allocation for
the construction of 259 bridges due to lack of research in soil testing and
identifying flood levels;
RM37.1 million mismanagement by the Kedah State
Economic Planning Unit for the Alor Setar Aquatic Center;
Kangar Municipal Council in Perlis lost potential
revenues due to inability to collect assessment rates; and much, much more!
Those involved are clamoring for ‘damage control’. The finger pointing and
the lame excuses are also in full swing. Already, two ministers have laid the
blame on each other. PTPTN has issued a statement saying that its 26,000 study
loans given to non-Malaysian students were ‘administrative errors’. The
prime minister wants an explanation. So do 27 million Malaysians.
This ‘public accountability’ thing is not too bad, issit?
