Magic Wonka

The works of Roald Dahl was one of the first books I read during my childhood and as such, I had many fond memories of his works. As such, I had hoped that the movie adaptation of Charlie and the Chocalate Factory would do justice to the book which in my opinion was one of Dahl’s best. The problem with bringing the book to the silver screen was because of the fantastical and surreal elements of the story which, while entertaining, is totally unrealistic. Fortunately however, director Tim Burton thrives on such elements and his trademark visual style (see Big Fish, Nightmare Before Christmas, Edwards Scissorshands etc) mehshed in perfectly with the world Dahl created in words.

I really enjoyed the movie. It became an experience, not unlike reading a story book, but this time it’s unfolding in front of our eyes. We’re bombarded with unique visuals, bright colours, wonderful tunes and great acting. I really liked the songs in the movie (yes, songs) every single one of them have is a must-see and must-hear. And talking about great acting, Johnny Depp proves to me once again why he is in my opinion the most talented actor in the world. He totally loses himself to the character Willy Wonka to the extent that at times you forget that he is in fact Johnny Depp. His take on Wonka is weird, quirky and yet, distinctly human.

All in all, an enjoyable and highly recommended movie. Just check out your sense of reality before you enter the cinema.
